How to Prepare Your Blonde Clients for Summer (and protect their hair while you do it)

Summer = More Blondes, More Lightening & More Maintenance

Summer is traditionally the biggest blonding season in the salon calendar. Clients want brighter, lighter and sun-kissed hair, but they’re also swimming in salt water, sitting under UV exposure and hitting the pool more often.

That combination can lead to dryness, brassiness and breakage unless you build protection into the service from the very start.

Here are the top tips we recommend sharing with your clients (and training your team on) to support healthy blondes all season long:

1. Start with Scalp + Hair Health Conversations

Before lightening, position yourself as their hair care partner, not just their colourist.

Ask:

  • How often will you be swimming this summer?

  • Will you mostly be in saltwater (beach) or chlorinated pools?

  • What's your current at-home care routine?

Australian blondes are exposed to strong UV, humidity and constant water contact, so getting the hair prepped early helps prevent dryness and discolouration before it begins.

You can also explain:

  • Saltwater expands the cuticle, pulling moisture out

  • Chlorine binds to blonde and can cause mineral build-up and dullness

  • UV exposure fades toner and dries the hair shaft

  • SPF for scalp and hair is just as important as sunscreen for the skin

This gives you a chance to educate instead of repair later.

2. Use Wider Foils for Better Blending & Faster Services

Summer blondes = more balayage, money-pieces and foils around the hairline for that “fresh from the beach” glow.

Pop-up boxes in a wide format speed up application and give smoother, more seamless lifting, especially around the face frame.

Wide foils help you:

✔️ Cover more surface area per section
✔️ Work faster during peak season
✔️ Avoid slippage on humid days
✔️ Minimise waste

3. Protect the Hair Before It Needs Repair

Client education starts in the chair.

Quick education phrases you can use:

“Chlorine holds onto blonde like a magnet, protection now saves breakage later.”

“Just like sunscreen for skin, hair needs UV defence too.”

"Hydration is the difference between glossy blonde and stringy blonde in summer.”

Pairing blonding with a treatment add-on is not “upselling”. It’s safeguarding the result your client is paying for.

4. Home Care = Your Colour Insurance

We often assume the client knows what to do at home, but salon maintenance fails mostly happen after they leave.

Suggest:

✔️ Purple/blue toning when needed (not daily)
✔️ UV/heat leave-in to prevent brittleness
✔️ A deep hydration mask weekly
✔️ Rinse hair with fresh water before swimming

When clients understand the why, they will stick to the how.

5. Sustainable Salon = Conscious Client Loyalty

More clients than ever are choosing salons based on values.

Using recycled aluminium foils is one of the simplest ways to reduce your salon footprint without changing your technique. Most stylists switch for sustainability, but stay because of ease of use and quality.

Eco-conscious doesn’t have to mean complicated!

Summer blondes can be both beautiful and healthy when the right prep and protection is built into the service journey. By using wide-format foils, educating early, and reinforcing at-home care, you set your blondes up to last well beyond the beach season.

Because when your client’s hair stays glossy, hydrated and bright, you become the stylist they trust for every season.
